How to Play 9K Club

If you have never played a sliding-merge puzzle, this is the whole thing in five minutes. 9K Club has one game, four controls and one target — the 9 tile.

Step one: slide the board

Press an arrow key, or swipe across the board on a phone. Every tile slides that way at once, as far as it can go. Nothing is aimed and nothing is selected — you move the whole board or nothing at all.

Step two: push matching numbers together

When two tiles showing the same number collide, they become one tile showing the next number. That is the only way the ladder climbs: two 1s make a 2, two 2s make a 3, and so on.

Step three: keep the board tidy

After every successful slide, a new tile appears in a random empty square. That is the pressure in the game: if you slide carelessly, the board fills with odd numbers that cannot pair up, and a full board with no matching neighbours is the end of the run.

  • Choose one corner at the very start and never let your biggest tile leave it.
  • Prefer the two directions that push towards that corner.
  • Before you slide, look for two or three pairs you can merge in the same move.
  • Use Undo when a slide clearly went wrong — it is there for exactly that.

Step four: reach 9

Keep chaining merges and the ladder climbs. When the 9 tile appears, the club tells you the ladder is finished. You can carry on with the same board to push your score up, or start a clean run.

A worked example

Say your bottom row reads 4, 3, 2, 2 from the left, with your 4 in the bottom-left corner. Slide left: the two 2s merge into a 3, and the row becomes 4, 3, 3. Slide left again: the two 3s merge into a 4, giving 4, 4. One more slide left and you have a 5 in the corner. Three slides, one new tile on the ladder — that is the rhythm you are looking for.

FAQ

Questions

How do I start playing 9K Club?

Open club9k.org and scroll to the board. It is already running — there is no start button, no sign-up and no download. Your first slide begins the run.

What is the fastest way to learn?

Play one run without thinking about the score. Slide left and down only, and watch how the tiles stack against the bottom-left corner. The pattern becomes obvious within a couple of minutes.

Can I undo a bad move?

Yes, one step. The Undo button under the board takes back your last slide, and it refreshes after every move you make.
